The Center for Creative Solutions, Inc. Announces Student Creativity Awards

The Center for Creative Solutions, Inc. announced the recipients of the second round of creativity awards given as part of World Creativity and Innovation Week 2011.  For the second year, three students from the A. K. Smith Career Center will be honored for outstanding creativity in an academic setting.  Students from all of La Porte County are enrolled at the Smith Career Center.

The first winner was Shelby Mitchell in the Health Careers Class where she is an A
student.  She will attend Purdue North Central in the fall.

Cole Stephens, a junior, was recognized for his innovation in welding.  He placed first in
the Regional Skills USA Welding Competition.  In addition, he competed at the Indiana State
Competition, and with his team from the Smith Career Center, at the American Welders Society
competition in Indianapolis.

The third student honored was Michelle Johnson for creativity in culinary arts.  A junior and third-year culinary arts student, she assists the Food Service Department for the Michigan City Area Schools.

The first round of the Creativity Award winners were announced on the first day of
World Creativity and Innovation Week 2011.  Sharing the honors were the organizations, 2nd
Saturdays of La Porte and the Uptown Arts District and Lubeznik Center for the Arts of
Michigan City.  The awards were made during World Creativity and Innovation Week in
Northwest Indiana.

While the awards went to local groups promoting the fine arts, the award was given for the creative way by which the organizations attracted the public to the old main streets of Michigan City and La Porte, according to Cynthia A. Hedge, founder and CEO of the Center for Creative Solutions.  Accepting the awards were Laura Cutler for 2 Saturdays in La Porte, and Jeannene Anderson for the Uptown Arts District, Michigan City, and Carolyn Saxton for the Lubeznik Center.

The Center for Creative Solutions is a local non-profit organization “helping people discover creative solutions to their individual, professional, business, organizational and community challenges” through training, facilitation and consulting.

For the second year, The Center for Creative Solutions sponsored Creativity and Innovation Week 2011.  This year’s partners were the La Porte Public Library, Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana and the La Porte County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Michael G. Brennan, Chairperson of World Creativity and Innovation Week 2011 in
Northwest Indiana, noted that the purpose of the week is to celebrate and demonstrate the ability
of all people to think creativity.  Throughout World Creativity and Innovation Week, every
person is encouraged to recognize and use their own creativity in their homes, schools, jobs, organizations and communities.

He stated that Creativity and Innovation Week is also designed to make citizens aware that our society, our nation, and our economic viability depend on Americans’ ability to tap individual and collective creativity.  “Whether new ideas seem small or huge, they can have profound effects on our everyday lives,” Hedge stated.

“For most of 30 years, my office has been in downtown Michigan City.  I remember the days when downtown seemed abandoned.  How exciting it is to see so many people casually walking on Franklin Square, enjoying art and each other on first-of-the month Friday nights.  The same can be said of Lincolnway in La Porte on the second-of-the month Saturdays.  These groups have really helped our down towns come alive again!”

In May, the Center for Creative Solutions will present the second round of creativity awards.  For the second year, several students from the A. K.
